OUR 2023 LOCAL CHARITY OF THE YEAR
Supporting Young People
the lowdown is a Northamptonshire-based mental health charity that provides free and confidential support to young people aged between 11 and 25 years old. They offer a range of key and important services and a caring environment where young people are supported on their journey to positive mental health.
the lowdown provide counselling, wellbeing drop-ins, LGBTQ+ support, practical support, and sexual health advice across the county. As a charity they are mindful of the mental health journey young people have to embark on. To this end, the lowdown help teenagers transition into adult mental health care.
It’s no surprise they are one of the highly regarded mental health agencies that make up the REACH partnership.
Young people are at the heart of everything the lowdown does, and they often change lives and sometimes even save them!

Would you want to be a teenager right now? With all the political, technological, and social upheavals that we have seen over the last decade, it is little wonder that there has been a significant rise in mental health issues in younger people over the last decade.
Currently, nearly 20% of adults are suffering with mental illness, and according to the WHO, suicide is the “fourth leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds”. Furthermore, The Mental Health Foundation inform us that 10% of children and young people have a “clinically diagnosable mental problem”, and yet 70% of these have not had appropriate intervention at an early enough age.
the lowdown work hard with young people all over Northamptonshire. They change and save lives, helping young people on their journey to wellness. Their work with teenagers and the LGBTQ+ community has proven vital. According to their 2021-2022 annual trustees report, their work in Northamptonshire has delivered 12,243 support contacts for young people and their families, and they have supported 2063 individuals.
